Pakistani students wins MIT’s Healthcare award for Inventing a Low Cost Ventilator
Despite limited resources and access to updated technologies, a team of Pakistani students has won first prize at the MIT Sloan Healthcare Innovations Prize 2019 for inventing a low-cost ventilator.
The invented device called the Umbulizer, costs only $2,000, however, if we compare it with traditional ventilators which cost $15,000 it seems incredibly economical especially for the third world underdeveloped countries.
The winning team comprised of Shaheer Paracha from Boston University, Moiz Imam and Abdur Rahman Akkas from MIT, Sanchay Gupta from Harvard Medical School, a mechanical engineering student from MIT namely Wasay Anwer, Boston University student Rohan Jadeja,
The team won the first prize of $20,000.
Features and usage
As compared to the traditional ventilators this low-cost ventilator has four key functions. The device is simple and easy to operate having a single tube and also works on batteries.
According to Paracha, despite a population of over 200 million, Pakistan only has only limited ventilators.
When we inquired from Pakistani doctors and hospital administrators, they expressed a strong need for a device that is simple to operate, capable of remote monitoring, portable.
He further added that the prize money would be used for the current clinical trials and if it works in Pakistan, they see a market in underdeveloped countries in South America, Africa, and Asia, where around 2 million people die every year from respiratory diseases which can be prevented.
Because of the growing respiratory diseases in almost all the underdeveloped countries of the world, the need for an affordable ventilator is no doubt imminent.
